Chrome-6 Neutralizer

Prijsklasse: €166.00 tot €332.00 excl. btw

The SEEF Chrome-6 Neutralizer is a ready-to-use treatment fluid for the at-source control of Cr(VI) dust during maintenance and overhaul of combustion engines, gas turbines and CHPs. The product converts chromium-6 into non-carcinogenic chromium-3 while simultaneously preventing dust particles from becoming airborne. Tested and certified by SEEF B.V. (August 2025). Ready to use directly from the spray bottle or available in jerry cans.

SEEF Chrome-6 Neutralizer

During maintenance and overhaul of CHPs, marine engines, diesel engines and gas turbines, chromium-6 dust can be released from beneath insulation components. This dust forms when the chromium in stainless steel (SS) oxidises under prolonged heat, converting from chromium-3 into the carcinogenic chromium-6. It is typically recognisable by a yellow discolouration. The SEEF Chrome-6 Neutralizer is an acid-based, biodegradable fluid that converts Cr(VI) into chromium-3 on the spot. By simultaneously wetting the dust, the product also prevents dust particles from becoming airborne.

SEEF B.V. investigated this product in August 2025, examining its effectiveness, storage behaviour and application. The findings are documented in a [SEEF certificate][LINK CERTIFICATE].

Suitable for use on chromium-containing paint?

No. The Chrome-6 Neutralizer is not intended for Cr(VI) in paint and coating systems. Chromium-6 in dry paint does not dissolve in the neutraliser solution in the same way dust does, meaning conversion is incomplete or does not take place at all.

For the analysis of Cr(VI) in dry paint, please refer to our laboratory analysis service.

Application area

The neutraliser is suitable when Cr(VI) compounds are present in a soluble or accessible form. This is the case for dust that accumulates beneath insulation components of:

  • CHPs (combined heat and power units): used in horticulture, power plants and industrial installations
  • marine engines
  • diesel engines
  • gas turbines

Do not use the product on acid-sensitive surfaces such as marble or natural stone. If in doubt, test on a small, inconspicuous area first to check material compatibility.

Occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations require employers to control carcinogenic substances at source. The SEEF Chrome-6 Neutralizer is a practical tool for meeting this obligation. All other protective measures applicable when working with Cr(VI) remain in force.

How does the product work?

The fluid has a pH of 3.5 and is colourless when purchased. Its acidic nature initiates a chemical reaction with Cr(VI), converting chromium-6 into chromium-3. Chromium-3 is not carcinogenic. By simultaneously wetting the dust, the product prevents further dispersal into the air. Both effects together reduce the exposure risk at the treated location.

Chromium-6 that is not accessible to the fluid — such as encapsulated dust or particles already present in the air — is not neutralised by this product. Always follow the safety protocols applicable when working in a Cr(VI) environment.

Instructions for use

The Chrome-6 Neutralizer is ready to use; no dilution is required.

Step 1: Allow to cool. Ensure the surface has cooled to approximately ambient temperature, in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s guidelines. If the surface is too warm, the fluid evaporates too quickly and the dwell time will be insufficient.

Step 2: Apply. Attach the trigger to the bottle. Spray the fluid onto the suspected areas. Ensure thorough and even wetting of the entire surface.

Step 3: Dwell time. Allow the product to work for a minimum of 15 minutes. Keep the surface wet throughout this period.

Step 4: Check. After the dwell time, carry out a test to determine whether the treatment has been effective (see below).

Step 5: Repeat if necessary. If Cr(VI) is still detected after testing, repeat the treatment. Contact SEEF for advice if positive results persist.

Always follow OHS procedures applicable to working with chromium-6. Also consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product.

Checking the result

Use the SEEF ST01 Swab Test for a quick indicative check before and after treatment. A negative swab result is not reliable on its own: a negative outcome does not rule out the presence of Cr(VI). Follow up a negative result with the SEEF TK01 Test Kit or send samples for laboratory analysis.

A positive result after treatment indicates the neutralisation was insufficient. Repeat the treatment. In complex situations, seek specialist advice from SEEF or Eco-Point.

Storage and shelf life

Store the product in a dark location, unopened and below 25°C. Under these conditions it remains fully effective for approximately two years. Preferably use fresh batches; effectiveness decreases as the product ages.

Discolouration of the fluid to yellow, orange or red is normal and is not a reason to discard the product. A strongly dark brown colour indicates the product should be replaced.

Protect the product from frost.

Safety

The Chrome-6 Neutralizer has no CLP labelling obligation and falls outside transport regulations (ADR, RID, ADN, IMDG and ICAO-IATA). The product is biodegradable in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004.

When applying, wear eye protection and chemically resistant gloves (CR, IIR, FKM or nitrile rubber, thickness >0.5 mm, breakthrough time >480 minutes in accordance with EN 374). Ensure adequate ventilation.

The full Safety Data Sheet is available on request.

This product reduces the risk of exposure to Cr(VI) dust but does not guarantee complete elimination. It forms part of a broader risk management approach: assess the situation, apply all protective measures required when working with Cr(VI) and carry out measurements where needed.
