Safety first

The SEEF test method fits into the trend of growing attention from government and (national) agencies for safe working. For example, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) launched the campaign ‘Safe working with hazardous substances’. Awareness among employees of the dangers of exposure to chromium-6 in the workplace is also increasing. A multitude of companies and sectors may encounter the presence of chromium-6 in objects and the associated issues. Think, for example, of demolition work, companies that process or transport chemical waste, the construction and energy sector, the industry, and metal processing companies.

Laws and regulations

The addition of chrome 6 to paints and primers is prohibited in the USA. In the EU, chrome-6-containing paint can only be used with a permit since September 21, 2017.

In Europe, the REACH regulation has been in effect since December 2006, the regulation for the registration and evaluation of and the authorization and restrictions regarding chemical substances. The Netherlands has incorporated this regulation into existing legislation. Belgium and Denmark have now done the same.

Governments, national and semi-governmental agencies have established management regimes for working with chrome-6-containing materials. These require employers and clients to take measures that prevent or at least minimize exposure to chrome-6. The Ministry of SZW is currently researching the effect of those protective measures.

Interpreting the protective measures correctly is essential. Unfortunately, we often see unnecessary measures being prescribed, causing projects to spiral out of control financially. SEEF can help you determine this correctly.
