Although these compounds have in many cases been replaced by alternatives, they remain present in existing paint layers and industrial applications. This brings health and environmental risks and requires careful management during maintenance and removal work.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:45;748-792\">Why is Cr(VI) used in paint and coatings?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:92;794-885\">Cr(VI) compounds offer properties that remain difficult to replace in certain applications:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\" data-sourcepos=\"15:1-17:361;887-2548\">\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:716;887-1602\"><strong>Corrosion protection:<\/strong> Cr(VI) prevents rust formation and extends the service life of metal structures. What makes Cr(VI) distinct is that it offers <strong>active protection<\/strong>, in contrast to passive barrier coatings. Cr(VI)-containing primers, such as strontium chromate, partially dissolve when corrosion damage occurs and form a protective layer that shields the underlying metal and prevents further corrosion. This process, known as <strong>cathodic protection<\/strong>, causes Cr(VI) to react with corrosion products and prevents further attack of the substrate. This maintains coating adhesion, which is particularly important with aluminium, where corrosion can otherwise rapidly lead to delamination of the paint layer.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"16:1-16:585;1603-2187\"><strong>Pigment function:<\/strong> Lead chromate and zinc chromate are used as yellow, red, and sometimes green colour pigments. When Cr(VI) compounds are used as pigments, the risks can be higher: concentrations are often considerably greater than in other Cr(VI)-containing applications, and the Cr(VI)-bearing paint layer is typically on the outside of the coating system, meaning direct exposure occurs when sanding or removing the coating. By contrast, some multi-layer paint systems contain Cr(VI) only in the primer, so sanding only the topcoat often results in no direct Cr(VI) exposure.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:361;2188-2548\"><strong>Adhesion:<\/strong> Strontium chromate improves the adhesion of coatings to metal surfaces, particularly in the aerospace and automotive industries. This is especially important with aluminium, which is susceptible to corrosion that can reduce coating adhesion. It is difficult to fully extract Cr(VI) from the coating without releasing metals such as zinc or aluminium, which can donate electrons and reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), affecting the results. The acid concentrations in rapid tests are also often insufficient to dissolve chemically resistant coatings such as epoxy coatings or chlorinated rubber paint. Laboratory analysis is therefore the only reliable method to establish the actual Cr(VI) concentration.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"63:1-63:467;5385-5851\"><strong>Laboratory analysis:<\/strong> Other conventional analytical methods, such as NEN 5617, NIOSH 7600, and ISO 15192, also encounter problems with matrix interference and semi-quantitative results in Cr(VI) analyses of coatings and air samples. SEEF&#8217;s patented method is the only reliable way to establish the actual Cr(VI) concentration. Because Cr(VI) is still present in a large proportion of existing coatings, detection and control are essential.
